A couple of months ago my TiVO popped up an offer for a free trial on a music service called Rhapsody. This is an online service that allows a user to look up up just about any album and play it on your computer - or in my case, on my television via TiVO. It was free and I’m a technology geek, so I signed up.

The first thing I did was look up old music that I once owned - either on old records that I still keep but no longer have the equipment to play, or that I once had on CDs but that I’ve misplaced over the years as I’ve moved on from place to place and situation to situation. I looked up records that I played with my friends back in high school, and the songs that I played when I was alone and in my darkest adolescent moods. And then there was the moment when I unexpectedly came across the ABBA song that was the bridal march at my first wedding.

It was all an experience of aching nastolgia and surprisingly strong emotions.

Anyway, I hope I’m still just a little too young to put all my energy into reconnecting to my past (especially that far distant time in my past when I bought most of my old music -in all reality it wasn’t really that fun the first time around) and since then I’ve tried to move on to newer music that I haven’t heard before. Finding new music that I like is a hit and miss operation at best, but the hunt itself is part of the fun and my favorites list is starting to expand.

If you have particular ideas on where you think I should be looking, drop me a note and I’ll give it a try. And if you’re ever in the mood, drop on by sometime and I’ll introduce you to some of the odder corners that I’ve found in the music world (William Shatner’s latest might surprise you).
