I just found out that I am part of something called Generation Jones. Apparently, this was a name created by a guy named Jonathan Pontell to describe people born somewhere between 1954 and 1965. The term has been around for a while, but I guess I don’t watch enough talk shows because I first heard about it just a couple of days ago.

I know that enlightened people aren’t supposed to be concerned about labels, but I’ve always hated the idea that I’m some kind of tail end baby boomer. To me, those were the people who either went to Vietnam or Woodstock or both. I was 11 years old when the Vietnam war ended, and I can tell you for sure there wasn’t any free love to be found when I turned 18 back in the 80s.

Also, I have a fairly profound distaste for the boomers as a generation. I believe they tend to think that the whole damn world is supposed to be wrapped around their needs. When the boomers went to state college, it was just about free because that was how they wanted it. Now that the boomers are all taxpayers instead of students, it suddenly isn’t right anymore for the state to spend so much on higher education, and fees have gone through the roof. Gee, that’s a convenient shift, isn’t it? And since a lot of them are going to be dead in a few decades, none of them care about the national debt either. Why should they - they aren’t going to be paying it.

Anyway, I’m quite happy to be called a Joneser.
